Ronald Reagan represents many things to many people. But to me, he will always stand as an unfortunate turning point in the values and virtues of Our Great Democracy.

I don’t generally blog things in real time but here I am watching Nightline at 11:38pm on Friday night and we’ve only just begun with the names. There are hundreds and hundreds to go and already my mind is reeling. All these men — and they are *mostly* men — dead. How we do not know, but dead nonetheless.

Now whether you support or oppose same-sex marriage, it is beyond debate that an amendment specifically created to exclude a class of citizens from full participation in all the benefits of society would lie well outside the range of the previous 27 amendments. Not that such an argument is sufficient in and of itself, but the fact that the proposed amendment is inconsistent with existing patterns should give all of us particular pause.

Perhaps more than any other issue in American history, the debate over same-sex marriage truly pits the religious tenants of moral absolutism, biblical interpretation, and messianic zeal against the democratic values of tolerance, inclusion, and diversity, as well as the Constitutional principles of limited federal power, an independent judiciary, and the protection of minority rights.

Although heterosexual Americans may believe that the issue of gay marriage has nothing to do with them, what those same Americans fail to realize is that this issue is not so much about gay rights as much as it is a proxy fight over the separation of Church and State.

The anniversary of the completion of the Declaration of Independence provides an annual catalyst for us to reacquaint ourselves with the words, intentions, and genius of our nation’s founding fathers. In reading their 1351, it’s hard not to feel proud to be an American. An equally important question for today however is, are you proud of America?
