This idea that you don’t discuss politics in polite company is an idea foisted about the citizenry by the power-elite who don’t want us talking about what they’re doing. We can’t afford to be quiet any more. There’s simply too much at stake.

It is at moments like these, when the likely outcome is so dangerously close to tragic, that our writers, critics, and commentators most clearly display their true nature. And while some of the most famous commentators are proving once and for all that they are nothing but narrow-minded ideologues whose only allegiance is to their own hatreds and overgrown egos, others are clearly demonstrating their capacity to consider new information, to change their positions, and even admit mistakes.

Clearly the Administration’s failures in Iraq stand as symbols of unprecedented naivity, arrogance, and apathy. Unfortunately, they also stand for something more, something more troubling and something more insulting. They stand for President George Bush’s lack of faith in the American people as well as his lack of confidence in our democracy.

I don’t generally blog things in real time but here I am watching Nightline at 11:38pm on Friday night and we’ve only just begun with the names. There are hundreds and hundreds to go and already my mind is reeling. All these men — and they are *mostly* men — dead. How we do not know, but dead nonetheless.
