Now whether you support or oppose same-sex marriage, it is beyond debate that an amendment specifically created to exclude a class of citizens from full participation in all the benefits of society would lie well outside the range of the previous 27 amendments. Not that such an argument is sufficient in and of itself, but the fact that the proposed amendment is inconsistent with existing patterns should give all of us particular pause.

Perhaps more than any other issue in American history, the debate over same-sex marriage truly pits the religious tenants of moral absolutism, biblical interpretation, and messianic zeal against the democratic values of tolerance, inclusion, and diversity, as well as the Constitutional principles of limited federal power, an independent judiciary, and the protection of minority rights.

I don’t know the official definition of “credibility gap” but it’s clear you’re getting close when the people on the ground openly disagree with the official rhetoric of the policy makers. How long are we are we supposed to wait for this Administration to level with us about their actions in Iraq?
