Reduce Junk Mail
Appearing in The Environment
According to the Native Forest Network, the average American receives 10.8 pieces of junk mail a week. That comes to something like 560 pieces a year requiring 100 million trees to produce 4.5 million tons of the stuff. All for a response rate somewhere south of 2%.
Both Ecofuture and Native Forest Network have tips for getting off of mailing lists as does the County of San Mateo’s RecycleWorks site. You can also send a letter to the Direct Marketing Association and ask to be placed on a “do not mail” list. The easiest place to start however is with the credit reporting bureaus responsible for the bulk of unsolicited credit cards. They have an automated phone system that takes about three minutes, 888-5OPT-OUT.
